The power of
thinking differently
Autism is a developmental disorder that affects how someone thinks, feels, and behaves. Because autism manifests itself in various ways, we speak of a spectrum: every person with autism is unique and occupies a different position within this broad spectrum. In Belgium, an estimated 3% of the population, or approximately 350,000 people, belong to this group.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
The brains of people with autism process information differently from those of neurotypical individuals, resulting in both unique challenges and specific strengths in various areas.
Social interaction and communication
-
People with autism have a unique approach to social interactions. They value clarity and direct communication and often find non-verbal cues, such as tone of voice and body language, difficult to notice, understand, and apply. This preference for unambiguity can prevent confusion, but may sometimes lead to misunderstandings.
-
Empathy for the thoughts and feelings of others is not self-evident, but this does not mean autistic people lack empathy. They experience emotions differently and often follow their own rules in social situations.
Repetitive and structured behavior
-
Structure and predictability provide stability and peace. Autistic people often have routines and rituals that give them a sense of security. This preference can help them focus and excel in their interests.
-
Intense interests and a passion for specific subjects are often present. These fascinations often lead to deep knowledge and exceptional skills in their areas of interest.
Autism offers a different view of the world: it is a different way of seeing and thinking.
SENSORY EXPERIENCES AND UNMISTAKABLE TALENTS
People with autism experience the world through their senses in a unique way. This can range from heightened sensitivity to sound and light to a fascination with certain textures or movements. These distinctive sensory experiences enrich their perception and can contribute to their creative and analytical talents.
People with autism have diverse and impressive talents. Thanks to their ability to focus deeply, pay attention to detail, and think analytically, they often excel in tasks that require precision and dedication. Their loyalty and honesty make them reliable team members, while their open-minded approach to problems often leads to innovative solutions and creative ideas.
NEURODIVERSITY
Neurodiversity refers to the combination and inclusion of neurotypical and neurodivergent profiles. Neurodivergent brains are wired differently and function uniquely compared to neurotypical brains. Neurodivergence is also a broad concept and includes more neurotypes than just autism, such as ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and high sensitivity. The neurodiversity model considers all neurotypes as equal, with each individual processing information in their own way. Different, but not inferior. Respect, acceptance and inclusion are the core values of neurodiversity.
TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY
Understanding and appreciating autism as a unique way of being helps create an inclusive society. By emphasising the talents and abilities of people with autism, we can work together to create a world where diversity is celebrated and everyone has the chance to shine.
