Driven by our ambition to employ as many IT talents with autism as possible in cyber security, Passwerk took part in the Cyber Security Challenge Belgium for the first time as a partner. This event took place at the Koninklijke Militaire School in Brussels. Since 2015, this event is organised to raise awareness and interest of students who are about to complete their cyber security training.
Based on the Capture The Flag principle, this competition is a challenge game played by teams of up to 4 students. During a limited period of time, the teams must solve various challenges that are linked to a wide range of security problems, such as cryptography, reverse engineering, network security, web or mobile application security and forensic analysis, among others. The complexity varies from trivial to extremely challenging.
This competition starts with a pre-selection in which about 800 students can participate, each time in teams of 4 people. The best 150 among them (approx. 40 teams) are then invited to participate in the two-part final. On Friday, everyone competes in an on-site Capture The Flag, then the top 25 teams compete in a variety of expert challenges on Saturday. Finally, the 10 top teams are rewarded various prizes during the award ceremony on Saturday evening.
The Cyber Security Challenge is organised by NVISO and supported by various companies, public authorities and organisations that are committed to increasing awareness of the importance of cyber security. During the event, the partners also have the opportunity to mingle with all participants and schools during a walking dinner.
This year, the winner came from the Koninklijke Militaire school itself. After several runner-up places, 'The Royal Military Hackademy' finally took home first prize: tickets for the DEFCON Hacking Conference in Las Vegas.
